不中用的冷火雞?

剛剛過去的11月26日是美國人的感恩節。想起感恩節，便想起火雞。

美國俚語 slang 當中，turkey 一字似乎都不是好東西，有不中用的傢伙、笨蛋及失敗之作等意思。

# This movie is a real turkey.
這部電影真糟。

# My cousin thinks he knows everything but he's a real turkey.
我的表兄以為他什麼都懂,實際上他真是個笨蛋。

而亦有幾個 idioms 是與 turkey 有關的：


cold turkey (n) = 突然終止某種已經成隱的習慣，如吸毒，酗酒或抽煙等。

# Six years ago she went cold turkey on a three-pack-a-day smoking habit.
六年前，她突然一下子戒了（完全停止了）每天3包的吸煙習慣。

talk turkey (v) = 有話直說或嚴肅地談某事

# I'm tired of this nonsense. Make him talk turkey.
我厭倦了這種胡說八道，叫他直说吧！

# John wanted to talk turkey, but Yoko just wanted to joke around.
約翰想談正經事，但是洋子只想鬧著玩。

turkey shoot (n) = 一邊倒的戰爭（或比賽）
