農曆新年伊始，很多人趁機預測新一年的運程，希望來年萬事如意。運程、命運及運氣的英文可稱為fortune。

Many fortune-tellers claim that they can tell your fortune(s) in the coming year.
很多算命先生聲稱可預告你在新一年的運程。

運程分好壞 形容各不同

好的運程稱為fortune或者good fortune；壞的運程稱為ill fortune。

He had the (good) fortune to join the famous football team.
他很幸運能夠加入那著名的足球隊。

It was ill fortune that he lost his life in the accident.
他在意外中喪生，運氣真差。

用作眾數 尤指運勢

當作為眾數fortunes時，特別是指一直以來的運程、運勢。

The manager thought of different ways to maintain the fortunes of the team.
那名領隊想出很多辦法來維持球隊的運勢。

The fortunes of the family saw a decline after the death of the father.
父親去世之後，家道中落。

亦解作金額龐大的財富

Fortune這個字也可解作財富。有一本名為"Fortune"的外國雜誌，中文譯名也是《財富》。

He made a fortune in doing property business.
他經營地產生意，賺了一大筆錢。

He inherited a big fortune from a remote relative.
他承繼了遠房親戚的一大筆財富。

This handbag is worth a fortune.
這個手袋價值不菲。

The old lady lost a small fortune on investing in minibonds.
老人家投資迷債損失一大筆錢。

前面加Small 仍指不少金錢

從上面的例子可以看到，當fortune解作財富時，是很龐大的財富，並非小額金錢。即使在前面加上small，成為a small fortune，也不是指一小點錢，而是數額不少的金錢。

Fortune smiled on him. He won a small fortune in the lucky draw.
他得到幸運之神的眷顧，在抽獎中贏得不少金錢。

"Fortune smiles on somebody"是英諺，即是說，得到幸運之神眷顧。
