Compound Nouns

在英語世界內，很多詞是由兩個或以上的詞結合而成的，稱Compound Words(複合詞)：可以是noun+noun，e.g. football；也可以是adjective+adjective，e.g. supernatural；有時是adjective+noun，e.g. blackboard；也有verb+verb, e.g. freeze-dry。還有很多不同組合，有趣得很。這回先跟大家談Compound Nouns(複合名詞)的組合。

複合名詞配對練習表

先考一考您，試把下表兩格內的名詞配合成對，組成有意義的Compound Nouns：

內有數字 易犯錯誤

當Compound Words內有數字的情況出現時，很多時會犯以下錯誤：

1.This is a two-ways street.

這是一條雙向行車的街道。

2.He has written a ten-pages report.

他寫了一份10頁的報告。

驟眼看來，句一的"two-ways"和句二的"ten-pages"既然是複數 (Plural)，當然應該加"s"於名詞後面！原來組合成Compound Nouns後，起了變化，這些數字名詞已當作形容詞使用，變成Compound Adjectives，故不須加"s"。

數字名詞 不用加"s"

請看下例：

1.　That three-year-old boy is much smarter than many adults !

那3歲孩童較許多成年人還聰明得多呢！

2.　Peter bought his fiancee a five-caract diamond ring.

彼得買了一枚5卡的鑽石指環送給其未婚妻。

3.　The ten-storey building collapsed and three residents were killed.

那座10層高的大樓倒塌下來，3名住客死亡。

4.　John had an extra-marital affair and claimed he could not bear the seven-year itch.

約翰聲稱7年之癢導致他的婚外情。

大家必須留意的是：句一的"three-year"、句二的"five-caract"、句三的"ten-storey"和句四的"seven-year"都沒有加"s"，這是Compound Nouns的變異(成為Compound Adjectives)寫法，一不小心就會犯錯了！

總括而言，Compound Nouns的組合多元化，用途又廣泛，多讀、多聽，自然有進步。
